Swollen Gums And The Common Cause Of It

Gums that are swelling may not only appear unsightly, but can also act as a platform for further destruction of healthy teeth and the bone and connective tissues that surrounds and supports the teeth. Swollen gums can be caused by bacterial infection of the gingiva. Dental plaque is the cause of gum infections which is a thin covering of food and bacteria on the tooth surface. The plaque contains bacteria that triggers response from the gums, which result to swelling. The accumulation of white blood cells and fluids, which in turn counteracts the action of the bacteria causes gums to become swollen and red. The gums may also swell due to certain normal conditions such as pregnancy and puberty.
